Search continues for 100 still missing after PNG ferry disaster

The search will continue at first light this morning for survivors from the ferry that sank off the north coast of mainland Papua New Guinea on Thursday.

The Rabaul Queen sank between Kimbe on the island of New Britain, and the mainland city of Lae.

238 survivors have been rescued, but more than one hundred people are missing.

The acting chief executive of PNG’s Maritime Safety Authority, Captain Nurur Rahman, says there’s a good chance more survivors will be found.

“I’m positive because the water temperature is over 20 degrees so it’s not the freezing cold of the northern latitudes and it is understood that 3 to 4 say survival is not too uncommon here.”

Nurur Rahman says the government has ordered the authority to investigate the cause of the sinking once the recovery phase is complete.
