The year 2014 resurrected another debate on whether or not to arm police officers. This time the caveat being officers must go through training and a psychological evaluation before they are given guns. Both the Fono and members of the public spoke out strongly on the subject — most were opposed.

But the drive-by shooting at the Leone Police Substation in November and weeks later, on Dec. 28 when shots were fired a at police vehicle with three officers inside, one of whom was injured, has again brought the issue to the forefront and has some people rethinking their positions on how police officers are to protect themselves

While none of the officers were killed in the Dec. 28 shooting, the shooting reminds us all of Police Lt. Lusila Brown, who was shot and killed in front of the temporary court building in Fagatogo in July 2010.

Up until the Leone shootouts, stories that drew most attention were the illnesses of Gov. Lolo M. Moliga and Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin that culminated with Aumua Amata Radewagen unseating the 13 term Congressman. She will be sworn into Congress on Jan. 6, 2015, and is the first woman to serve as the delegate for American Samoa.
