Treasury releases qualifications for stimulus checks for non-filers

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — In a statement this week, ASG Treasurer Ueligitone Tonumaipe’a informed those with little or no income that by filing an American Samoa tax return that “you MAY qualify to receive” an Economic Impact Payment (EIP), or stimulus check as part of the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

Qualification pre-requisites are as follows:

•     valid social security number

•     US citizen, US national, legal resident with a valid 2020 American Samoa Immigration ID.

•     not eligible — if you have already received an EIP check directly from the US Treasury/Internal Revenue Service

•     also not eligible are those incarcerated and the deceased.

“Although you do not have any filing requirements, a tax return must be prepared for the sole purposes of receiving an economic impact payment,” said Tonumaipe’a.

Meanwhile, ASG Treasury reminds tax payers that filing deadline for tax year 2019 have been continued to July 15th, which is also the same deadline set by the IRS, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
