The case of methamphetamine (“ice”), which arrived through the US Post Office in a package that had a container in it labeled amazon.com, has resulted in a man being charged with one count of of unlawful possession of a controlled substance —methamphetamine.

Yuseff Carter made his initial appearance in District Court yesterday. Unlawful possession of meth is a felony, punishable by a mandatory term of imprisonment of not less than five nor more than 10 years, a fine of not less than $5,000 nor more than $20,000 or both.

According to court documents, police received a call last Thursday afternoon (Oct. 11) from Customs Officers at the Post Office requesting a Methamphetamine Field Test Kit “to test a significant amount of substance” discovered during a routine Customs search of a package.

Customs described the package as being a USPS mail container with an “Amazon” container inside. Court filings say that inside the Amazon package was a device that allowed for streaming of video over the internet, accessories and the substance suspected of being methamphetamine.

Customs officers told police that they weighed the methamphetamine and that “it weighed 1.2 ounces,” court documents say, which further state that Carter came to the Post Office to pick up the package.

After confirming test results of the meth by Customs, police verbally warned the defendant of his Constitutional Rights to which he stated that he understood.

The defendant was then taken to the Criminal Investigation Division where he was warned of his rights and was interviewed by police. The defendant waived his rights and made a statement to investigators.

Carter stated he picked up a yellow slip from the post office box on Oct. 12 but he didn’t pick up the package that day because it was too late. Carter allegedly told police that he was expecting a package from his father in San Diego, California, and he thought it had just arrived.

He told police that the package that he was expecting from his father was from the online company, “Amazon”.

The defendant was then informed that the package he received was packaged in an Amazon box to which the defendant stated he was “expecting something from Amazon but not this kind of package,” court documents state.

The defendant “also stated after the methamphetamine was discovered, [that] he looked at the package and did not recognize the names on the package but confirmed that the P.O. box number was his,” the government alleges in its case.

Carter’s bail is set at $5,000 and if he is able to post bail, the court set several conditions including that he does not attempt to leave the territory while his case is pending in court. It’s unclear at press time if the defendant is yet able to post bail.
