Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The American Samoa Historic Preservation Office (ASHPO) is spearheading a video and photo contest for locals who have an eye for capturing special moments.

PHOTO CONTEST

According to ASHPO, each year, their office produces calendars that feature historic photos of American Samoa. Some of the photographs on the calendars are “donated by families and friends of visitors, contractors, and service members who worked or visited American Samoa at one point in time.”

(All photos that have been featured in previous editions can be found at the Feleti Barstow Public Library in Utulei.)

This year, ASHPO is giving community members the opportunity to compete in a photo contest for a chance to have their historic photo featured in the 2021 calendar. The contest is open to any person currently residing in American Samoa. Participants are reminded that historic photo submissions must be no less than 50 years old. Registration forms can be picked up at the ASHPO headquarters in Fagaima (Georgina Complex).

The application and photos are to be turned in no later than April 6th and the winners will be announced April 14th.

Fourteen submissions will be selected and featured in the 2021 calendar and the winners will also receive copies of the calendars to distribute to family and friends.

VIDEO CONTEST

ASHPO is looking for 6-10 minute clips that highlight our cultural landscape “as well as a legendary and historical person, event, place, or story that has significantly impacted the history of American Samoa.”

The video contest is open to high schools students (public and private), and full-time students of the American Samoa Community College only; and submissions may be an individual project or a group of no more than 5 people.

The Top 3 winners will be rewarded with cash prizes:

    •    1st place -     $1,500
    •    2nd place -     $1,000
    •    3rd place -     $500

As with the photo contest, applications forms are available at the ASHPO main office in Fagaima on the ground floor of the Georgina Complex. The application summary is due Feb. 24th while the final videos are to be submitted no later than April 6th

Judging will take place April 8-9 and the winners will be announced April 14th.

More information on either or both contests can be obtained by calling ASHPO @ 699-2316
