Am. Samoa’s Archives Month ends with Halloween blast & prize giving
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The American Samoa Archives had a great time finishing up Am. Samoa Archives Month on this year’s Wednesday Night Halloween.
The ASG Dept. of Adm. Service families, Archives Month Poster Contest judges and the general Trick or Treat public attended the occasion; and a special appearance by Miss American Samoa 2018- 19, Ms. Magalita Johnson was a highlight of the event.
The evening’s activities were from 4- 7 p.m. and featured Trick or Treat candy and games for children; the announcement of the Am. Samoa Archives Month Poster Contest winners; a complimentary Samoan BBQ and umu meals; and a lightshow and music from the Siliva Band.
Poster Contest judges were Clara Reid of the Friends of the Museum Group, Epi Suafo’a-Tauai of the Am. Samoa Historic Preservation Office, Eliiki Afalava of the Dept. of Adm. Services, and local archeologist contractor Joel Klenck.
A Halloween prayer was offered by Rev. Joseph Semeatu, that was followed with some brief remarks by Territorial Archivist James Himphill about the purpose of the Archives Month celebrations and the importance of preserving Am. Samoa’s history, rights and government accountability.
The Poster Contest winners were then announced with the help of Ms. American Samoa, who graciously conveyed the Cash Awards and Certificates.
First place prize of $100 was awarded to J. Cartier, Grade 6, Midkiff School-Leone;
Second place prize of $75 went to Tuaoimaalii V. Afoa , Grade 7, Midkiff School-Leone;
Third place prize of $50 went to Justin Siliva, Grade 9, Tafuna High School;
Two Honorable Mention Prizes of $20 each were awarded to Johnny Siliva, Grade 6, Manumalo-Malaeimi and Joey Semeatu, Grade 6, Matafao, Fagaalu.
The American Samoa Office of Archives and Records thanks it’s generous sponsors and donators, who helped to make this year’s Archives Month a great success.
