Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Coral reef at Swains Island in American Samoa, showing an assemblage of plating Montipora coral and branching cauliflower coral Pocillopora meandrina.

The Swains Island is mentioned in the 2024 State of the Territorial Comprehensive Report as part of ASTCA’s accomplishments when it enabled mobile cellular and broadband data services for the first time on Swains Island, “marking a major milestone in our telecommunications services expansion and oceanic communications across the Pacific, all operating from a local 684 exchange as a domestic call.”

While the reason for the accomplishment is not stated, Samoa News points out that it would tie in with the Swains Island being visited by not only Swains Island people, who now ALL live on Tutuila, but by American Samoa leadership for the 98th US Flag raising anniversary held in May 2023.

There has been no update about the status of the island since the event.
