Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The Department of Public Safety is currently conducting an investigation into a tragic traffic incident that led to the death of a passenger who was involved in a police chase on Friday evening. 

Acting Police Commissioner Falanaʻi Lavataʻi Taʻase Sagapolutele confirmed the fatality, indicating the passenger's involvement in the police pursuit but refrained from sharing further specifics at this time. 

Samoa News has independently confirmed that four inmates were located at the scene of a vehicle crash in Leone, which occurred during a high-speed police pursuit. Despite this significant finding, the Acting Police Commissioner has opted not to provide any details regarding the specific involvement of these inmates in the incident.

The investigation is ongoing, and further information may be released as authorities continue to gather facts surrounding the circumstances of the crash and the police chase that preceded it.

He emphasized that the investigation is being carried out by both the Criminal Investigation Intelligence Bureau and the Traffic Division to ensure a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In addition to the ongoing investigation, the Acting Commissioner noted that authorities are also exploring the possibility of homicide by vehicle, indicating the seriousness of the situation and the potential legal implications that may follow.
