Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — On July 11th, The American Samoa Government held a formal groundbreaking ceremony for construction of the new Port Facility at the Fagatogo Wharf.

In his address, Governor Pulaali’i N. Pula expressed his gratitude to all project partners who played a vital role in making this happen. He extended special recognition to the American Rescue Plan Act Office (ARPA) for their critical support in fully funding the project. "This initiative transcends the scope of a traditional construction project, it's an investment in the future of our territory and our people," the Governor remarked.

Director of the Department of Port Administration, Mr. Barney Sene, also delivered remarks, outlining the significance of the new facility in enhancing maritime operations, strengthening economic development, and improving the safety and efficiency of port activities. Additionally, he expressed his appreciation to various partners and individuals who made this project possible.

The ceremony for this major infrastructure development under the direction of the Department of Port Administration began with an opening hymn rendered by members of the community who gathered in support of the event, followed by an invocation led by Stake President Fiatamalii Apulu.

Westland Construction, the company that’s building the Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Ottoville has been awarded the construction contract for the new Seaport Building that will house offices for the Department of Port Administration, a warehouse and offices for agencies that are involved in clearing vessels and cargo on the main dock.

Westlake’s winning bid was $28.57 million and is slated to take 18 months to complete. The project is 100% funded by ARPA. The project design was by Pioa Consulting with James Cubitt Architects of Australia — both companies will also serve as the construction management team.

Among the notable attendees were the First Lady Lois Phillips-Pula, members of the Fono, Cabinet officials, and other distinguished government leaders and community stakeholders.
