Celebrity chef to attend American Samoa Summit promoting breadfruit

One of Hawaii’s most well known chefs, Sam Choy has been invited to the Ulu Summit in American Samoa next month.

The territory’s Director of Agriculture Lealao Mel Purcell says one of the aims of the Summit is to demonstrate the full potential of breadfruit which grows abundantly on island.

He hopes products made from breadfruit such as flour and chips can be exported to the United States.

Mr Choy who is a chef, restaurateur and television personality, is a classmate of the Agriculture Director.

The two-day event will kick off with the Summit on Dec. 5.  at the Tauese P.F. Sunia Ocean Center and then an Ulu Festival at the Fagatogo Marketplace on Dec. 6.

The summit will focus on the technology part of the globalization and conversion of the breadfruit into various products that we use in our daily process. The festival will feature an ulu competition with a variety of dishes from a variety of ulu recipes.

You can pick up an entry/registration form from the Department of Agriculture in Tafuna. There is a $20 refundable fee to enter your recipe.
