Weekend stone fight mars Apia dance competition

An alleged stone fight between village youths that erupted last Friday night, has marred a local dance competition.According to eyewitnesses the fight caused damage to some local businesses, such as the Lober Industries at Taufusi, whose building sustained cracked windows. At the time of press an attempt to get an official comment from the company was unsuccessful, with a cashier there saying they could not comment as the matter has been left with their boss.He only said that when they arrived on Saturday morning to open up the store they found cracks in some of the windows. One eyewitness, an 11-year-old boy whose mother did not want his name published, said the youths in question were a part of the competition. The boy said he was one of hundreds who attended the competition’s finale held on the night in question. “Police were there,” he said.“They tried to stop the youths from attacking each other.”A concerned elderly father blamed the alleged fight on the fact the competition was held so late in the evening. While he also did not wish to give his name in fear of repercussion, he said; “the youths were too young and there was so much swearing”.He said that the competition should be held earlier in the day.If the competition should ever be late in the afternoon it should be finished before dark, he said.“If the organisers cannot control the situation perhaps they should stop the competition altogether,” said the father. He said, what disappointed him more was that even though Police were aware that it was a stone fight, when they arrived on the scene they did so unarmed.“They came with only their skulls,” said the father. His advice to the village matai is: “to take control of their youths.”
