Weather clears up for cruise ships visits

With a strong wind advisory cancelled early yesterday morning, the P&O Cruise ship the Aurora, with around 1,800 passengers and 850 crew members, entered the waterway into the Pago Pago Harbor just before 8 a.m. following a stop in Apia, Samoa.

Missing at the main dock for the cruise ship’s visit are the usual vendors’ tents. Waterfront and recreational activities for Pago Pago Harbor were closed Monday due to bad weather and it was lifted early yesterday morning.

A Port Administration official said the bad weather the night before resulted in no tents set up at the main dock and many vendors utilized the Market Place, which was packed yesterday with tourists off the cruise ship.

The Aurora sailed out of Pago Pago late yesterday afternoon amid cloudy skies, heading for  Denarau, Fiji.

Around 8 a.m. today, the next ship, ‘Costa Deliziosa’, which belongs to the Costa Cruises is scheduled to arrive from Honolulu on its maiden voyage and depart late afternoon for Suva, Fiji.

The ‘Costa Deliziosa’ is the largest vessel for this year with some 2,800 passengers and 912 crew members. Interestingly, this is the sister ship of the cruise liner Costa Concordia, which sank last month in the waters off the Tuscan coast of Italy.

High surf and small craft advisories were still in affect as of yesterday afternoon until early this morning. For today, forecasters are predicting north winds of 10-15mph along with isolated showers.
