Around 6:52 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, American Samoa time, an earthquake measured at 8.0 on the Richter Scale  struck with an epicenter located 195 km southwest of the Samoa coast, with a depth of 18 km. The temblor generated a nearly 3-meter tsunami -- measured from crest to trough -- according to preliminary data, said Chip McCreery, the director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii.

At 3 PM American Samoa time, Lt. Gov. Faoa Sunia announced that the tsunami has caused great damage to the electrical infrastructure, knocking out the main generator at Satala that supplies power to the island from the central village of Fagaalu all the way east to Onenoa.  There is also damage to the fresh water system and water is limited in that area.  The Satala plant may be down as long as a month and ASPA has stated power is out indefinitely.

Reports from Ofu say there is no power and a government plane has been deployed to access the situation.

Confirmed deaths stand at 22 with many people still unaccounted for from the villages of Leone and Pago Pago.

Water service on the eastern side is out due to broken water lines.  ASPA water division will be taking water trucks to try to supply the villages and people are cautioned to boil and conserve all water until further notice.

The public is urged to limit travel so that emergency crews and vehicles can function.

People off island who are looking for information about families can call the Red Cross at 699-6011 or 733-4645.

"My heart goes out to the people of Samoa as they struggle to cope with this terrible tragedy that has taken its toll in lives lost and property destroyed," said Senator Daniel K. Inouye. "We will do all we can to support federal assistance for those affected by the earthquake and tsunami as they look to recover and rebuild. Hawaii's thoughts and prayers are with Samoa this day."

We will update this site as more information is available.

Lift up your hearts in prayer The need is now at hand The cry of death and misery Is heard throughout the land. Tsunami has killed HUNDREDS The numbers still do grow This mighty act of nature Hath dealt an awful blow. Disease is running rampant Their lives are filled with woe The torment and the destruction Is more than we could know. Lift up your hearts in prayer For many souls have died The precious little children And all who have survived. Pray for aunts and uncles For mothers filled with grief Pray that 'God of Abraham' Will send them some relief. Lift up your heart in prayer For those who tried to flee The giant wall of water Tossed by a raging sea. Pray for the lost and hungry The homeless and the weak Pray that these ravaged countries Will find the help they seek. There came a wave like a great hand, Grabbing everything on the land, Its fingers of foam, circling round, Uprooting trees, raising homes to the ground, It aimed its fist at everything in sight, Nothing could survive this dreadful might, People ran in and out in time with the tide, Nowhere to go and nowhere to hide, The hand was born in the belly of the ocean, Fed by plates creating the potion, It grew in fury, it grew in power, The anger to be unleashed within the hour, No one new what was on the way, People PRAYING, children at SLEEPING, A shriek of surprise as somebody saw, A huge wall of white horses galloping ashore, The beasts dissolved under the heat, Sweeping hundreds of thousands off their feet, There was crashing and crunching and tearing apart, Seeping its way into everyone’s heart, Lives were lost, bodies found, Brutally killed by a hungry hound, When the punch came with the force of an army, The few that survived has now hold this tremendous painful memories within them BUT MY PEOPLE BE NOT DECEIVED FOE GOD IS OUR ANSWER...HAVE FAITH IN THE LORD...SAMOA IA FAATASE LE ATUA MO OUTOU

Every inch of my soul greaves for those who have lost. I have shed countless numbers of tears for the children, parents and families. Listening and reading to the tragic stories has deeply impacted my life. I do not understand why this happened. I know the people of Samoa are very religious. Parents would sasa their kids if they did not go to church. Its amazing that as much as we pray and as much as we praise the heavenly father, it still isn't enough. But, I will never quit my faith. Neither should any of you. Samoa, you will always be in my heart. You are beautiful and will always be beautiful. God bless the families and friends who had to endure such a heavy blow. I probably will never know how it feels to lose so many people in one day and I hope that I never will.Samoa! Samoa! Samoa! Samoan For Life...

God Bless and Keep Samoa and all the people of Samoa. I am praying for you all...that God will supply all your needs at this time....and to be with you and those who have lost loved ones during this tragedy. I had a miracle happen when I got to visit a dear friend of mine, Carol, who was originally from Western Samoa, however, she was in Tafuna, American Samoa with her husband and his family. It was a blessed privilege to live in a home....where there was regular family prayer. 7 years later, I found Jesus...and how can I thank God enough for you. My heart goes out to everyone in Samoa. I turly Love Samoa and Samoan people. I pray God will save all Samoan people everywhere....there are many Samoan families I am praying for at this time. Just know that there are people praying for you...and you are loved and deeply cared about you. I know God will take care of you. I remember Oral Roberts....when he had lost his daughter and son-in-law in a plane crash....yes, he and his wife were devastated and deeply grieved....and he felt that God had led him to share his experience with the public....and I remember that he said, "God must know something about this that we don't know." You see, there is a resurrection. A heavenly place in God's eternal love, where loved ones and family will reunite again. That is the hope that Christians share. God is giving us time to prepare for His return. It is in His power and ability that we can share in His resurrection. It is time to wake-up... Christ is Coming Soon and He will take His long awaited Bride home. There is a place in Heaven for you too...It is prepared. Jesus said, "In my Father's house there are many mansions...if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. (Jn. 14:2-3 New Testament Holy Bible) Jesus said..."I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die....(Jn. 11:25-26) God placed a love of Samoan people and Samoa in my heart at a very early age....and I pray that if you don't know God's love...that you can know it ....even right now. Please bow your head with me and simply pray this prayer with me: Dear God, I am very sorry for all my sins and I ask that you would forgive me ...I do believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God and that He died and rose again...on the third day. Jesus, I ask you to please come inside of my heart and be my Lord and Savior. I give you my life. and please fill me with your precious Holy Spirit and give me this new life. Thank you, God. You can have a brand new life and a bright future and God's incredible strength to help you and nurtue you along life's path...until your Journey here has ended and you go to your eternal home...with Jesus! May God Be with you forever. And if you've prayed that prayer...please share because God cares and He wants to bless you. It's important....to read your Bible...because it is spiritual nutrition to help you grow in your new life as a Christian. You will discover many wonderful things in there. It is important to pray also...for God loves to hear you talking to Him about anything and everything that is important to you. You will find great Joy in Celebrating your Faith in Christ with other Christian believers. Some people buy life insurance...but God's life insurance policy....is the Heaven's Best....Eternal Life!!!! Without it...it is surely hell. But truly....you are walking through the valley of the shadow of death now...and my heart goes out to you. I write this with love and grattitude...for the love Samoa has shown me. I still remember....the family member...up in the tree...putting flowers together for me to wear around my neck on the plane ride home. Those flowers smelled so beautiful. Just like the people in Samoa. I love you. I pray you will come to Jesus...even today...and get saved, so God can be so overwhelmingly happy to know....you are safe with Him. If only the family knew I was saved....they would be so happy. I pray for their safety. I love you. O tealofa e a oi, Samoa Love, In Christ, Lisa (all my prayers and tears are with you all)!! Be strong. And God grant you miracles from Heaven!!

I have a total lost at my home in Vatia as well, and it didn't matter to me, but what matter the most is our lives, "family" that is. All the materialistic things can be replaced, but our lives can't never be replaced ever. Thank God the heavenly father for his mercy, and grace upon us his children. It is a sad tragedy but God is with you all. And it is true what the "Annonymous" person wrote 3 rows below me... that remembering OTHERS before yourself especially through times of NEED will bring peace, harmony & a better outcome. It is a real hit to everyone that we find such catastrophe hit Samoa, but to actually find on a worse note that neighbors are stealing from neighbors without thinking is a damn SHAME to the Samoan people! We must literally think that EVERYONE is affected by one's actions, especially in this time of deprivation. TALOSAGA MO SAMOA !!!

For all the people who are back home in American Samoa, my prayers are with you to stay out of harm's way, be safe and God bless. Hearing the bad news came as a shock to me and I'm hoping that you all get the assistance you need to survive. On another note, after reading multiple articles about the quake and tsunami, it's a damn shame to see that even while something this horrible is happening, there are still pieces of scum who take it upon themselves to "loot" other people's businesses, homes and other property. Shame on you for your disgusting display of selfishness and stupidity. Have some respect for your neighbors and help them instead of helping yourself.

Editor of this story or future reports on the Tsunami: i feel anything negative postings on here should be on another story or even DELETED. we don't need to read any negative stuff OR tusitusi lima. we need prayers, faamalosiaga, medical supplies, and dedication. don't blame the leader don't blame this and that. things happen for a reason only God almighty knows. this is a tragedy that can happen anywhere. yes Samoa muamua le Atua. God is good all the time. Thank God that he spared the entire island. unfortunate we lost some of our loved ones but Indonesia was not not as fortunate they lost over 200 thousand lives in 11 countries. Malo people, I respect your frustration and comments regarding our leaders, but I rather put our thoughts and prayers for our people and families first. I don't want to correct anyone's freedom of speach toward who's wrong and who's right. First, we (human) should understand mother nature does happen either pacific islanders, mainland, foreign country, or anywhere in this earth. These includes earthquake, tsunami, or etc. however, this disaster does hit our island(s) which involves death to our love ones in the pacific islands. To me, we (Samoa people) all know how the KALEPE (UNFAITHFUL LEADERS and CHURCH LEADERS too)played evil and dirty politics which we believe a tragedy will happen anytimes in real life. But, I am totally saddness of the disaster that cause life of our love ones. As we all know, other countries and places are in the emergency disaster as our pacific islanders. We, who are off island, are just as devastated (and feeling helpless) from the loss families are facing, the magnitude the damage has done to our island, and just from the fact that our island had to face a tsunami! My prayers are continuously with you all during these hard times. May our Heavenly Father watch over our little "rock" and our families living there as well. Please (SamoaNews) continue to update us off-islanders with pictures and more news! God Speed!....Alofa's, Silaina Ho Ching.

Pago Pago is a very small boat harbor and has deep water harbor with most of the industry of the town surrounding the harbor. This is a real tradegy for this town as Pago Pago is the hub of the island and business district. Anyone that has been there before can attest to the severity of business that this is devastating to this town. The fishing industry for Tuna processing is also directly related and there factories are on the waterfront in the harbor also. Our prayer's go out to all the residents there and we all hope to get more news concerning this tradegy in the next few days as reports start to come along and people relate there stories in a chronological order. I used to live in Fungalu where the hospital is and wondered what has happened to this village along with others that are close by or near Pago Pago? Any reports I would like to be informed. Thanks so much.

Wow! Strong fighting words that are meant well but very unnecessary. This is the time to work together for the sake of the people, not tearing each other apart. There is plenty of time to do your mud-wrestling main event after taking care of the people's business first!
