The Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources will be holding a book launch for the publication of “A guide to the native ornamental trees of American Samoa” at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24, at the Malaloa Dock.

The author of the book, Dr. Edward Webb, previously worked at the Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources as a botanist in the 1990s, and is currently a lecturer at the National University of Singapore, while continuing his studies on the forests of American Samoa.

Gov. Togiola Tulafono has been invited to give remarks, and the Director of the Department of Marine and Wildlife Ray Tulafono will be welcoming the audience of invitees. Dr. Webb will be present to outline the importance of the book in promoting native species for use as ornamentals. He hopes the book will reach a large Samoan audience.

The book has been funded through grants from the USFWS Wildlife Restoration Program and State Wildlife Grants. It is free of charge and will be available from the Department of Marine and Wildlife office following the launch.

BPW ANNUAL MEETING YIELDS CHANGES

The Business & Professional Women of American Samoa held their Annual General Meeting at Mom’s Place last Thursday evening, June 10, 2010. President Mara Ashley explained to the membership that beginning with this meeting, an annual meeting would be held each year in June for the women’s organization.

The purpose of the annual meeting will be to make plans and set a tentative calendar for the upcoming year.

Merrilee May, first vice-president and president elect, made a brief presentation about her participation at the BPW International Conference held in New York City in February of this year.

Following Merrilee’s presentation, the membership voted to take on several programs for next year including a Women’s Empowerment Conference in October. A new dues schedule was also adopted.

A final workshop, the fourth in a series of workshops hosted by BPW this year entitled,  “Roadmap to a Successful Business” will be held in July, and elections for new BPW officers will be held in August. One of the key purposes of the Business and Professional Women’s organization is to develop the professional, business, and leadership potential of women.

WATERS, OCEANS, RIVERS AND LAKES HIGHLIGHTED IN FELETI BARSTOW SUMMER READING PROGRAM


Feleti Barstow Public Library makes a splash this summer with a reading program, which will highlight the world’s waterways: Water, oceans, rivers and lakes and the wondrous creatures that live in them is the theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program.

The second registration for this year’s programs will be held on Tuesday, June 22 when the library opens at 9 a.m. Participants must register in advance, registration is one day only, and all registration is first come, first served.

The second session of the Summer Reading Program will kick off on June 28 – July 14, with two classes daily. This year’s themes are “Make a Splash at Your Library, Read!” for children ages 5 through 8, and “Make Waves at Your Library, Read!” for ages 9 through 15.

All reading, arts and crafts, and fun activities will focus on water, oceans, lakes, rivers and the colorful creatures that thrive in them. The morning class will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon, and the afternoon class from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Additionally, the second session of FBPL’s Computer Boot Camp begins July 12th and ends on July 30 2 p.m.- 4 p.m. each day. Computer Boot camp is an introductory class to computers for ages 10-14 years. Registration begins on June 22, and there is a $10 refundable registration fee. Students must show proof of age (birth cert. or hospital card) for registration.

All program registration must be done in person, at the library.
