The Fishing Vessel “Cape Elizabeth”, formerly the “Tradition” sank on Dec. 20 after a fire reporedly started in the galley.  All 22 crewmembers aboard were safely evacuated according to accounts from witnesses and the US Coast Guard report issued yesterday.

Eddie DaCosta, former C/E on the Cape Elizabeth commented on the website tunaseiners.com, “The captain told me that some of the crew’s shoes were melting from the heat of the deck as they were waiting to get into the skiff. They were picked up by another one of their company boats, CAPE BRETON, It’s too bad, she was a great ship, extremely well built.”

So Sorry to to hear about the Cape Elizabeth. I have always known it as the "Tradition" for nearly 20 years. Although in this picture its a lighter shade of blue than the traditional navy blue it use to have. Mr. DaCosta is right though. This is a great ship, and it was very well built. In the last 20 years I have experienced the sinking of several purseiners from American Samoa near home. These includes the "Evelyn DaRosa", The Jeannine and Legacy's sister ship, the "Golden Globe" and the "Adriatic Z" to name a few. May these boats "R.I.P.". These were all great ships and they surely brought a huge source of revenue to American Samoa.

Hope is, that TriMarine recovers and see's the crew is safe and out of danger. Insurance can cover any lost, but lives are more important. ASG should do whatever is needed to assure these folks are made right and recover. Tow the boat to Pago and get it fixed for jobs to locals.
