Twenty-two-year-old Miss Samoa Tusisaleia Hope Pomele is expected to arrive in Fiji tomorrow along with Miss Solomon Islands Millicent Barty, reports the Samoa Observer. Pomele left American Samoa, Friday, Nov. 13, on her way to Samoa to be crowned the new Miss Samoa, after Jacinta Bourne, who was crowned Miss Samoa Sept. 4, this year, resigned for personal reasons.

Pomele, a dancer for Tihati Productions, in Hawaii, was first runner-up this year during the Miss Samoa pageant themed: “Humility Elegance Purity— Celebrating the Tama’ita’i Samoa.” She competed as Miss Samoa USA.

Bourne’s resignation as Miss Samoa was accepted by the Samoa Tourism Authority (STA) early this month.

Before Pomele boarded the plane for Apia, via telephone, Pomele said she received the news from the STA about three days prior. She arrived from Honolulu, Thursday, Nov. 12 and was staying with family in Leone.

STA local office representative Seiuli Salamasina Von Reiche Ripley was there to see off the new Miss Samoa.

“It’s sudden news. I’m excited,” Pomele told Samoa News via telephone from the airport Friday, Nov. 13. “It’s a blessing from God and I’m looking forward to serving Samoa and promoting Samoa and the culture. It’s going to be a new step, a new direction for me.”

Pomele says after being crowned she will get right into preparing for the Miss South Pacific Competition that will be hosted in Fiji. The week-long pageant opens Saturday, Nov. 21. Pomele will depart Samoa Thursday for Fiji, she says.

“I’ll be practicing and doing some research... to be prepared for Fiji,” she said. Poumele is being accompanied to Samoa by Miss Samoa USA President Roleni Tasi from Utah.

Pomele, a nursing major at Kapiolani Community College in Honolulu, is from Aunu’u; Ta’u, Manu’a and Falefa, Samoa. She is the daughter of the late Tom Tausinio Vaimanino and Malae Aua Tuivaiave Pomele. For now, of course, her studies are on hold.

She is an EMT in the US Army Reserve and plans to enter the nursing program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Pomele told the News she was in Samoa recently as a volunteer who helped in tsunami relief efforts following the Sept. 29 tragedy. She was volunteering at Motootua Hospital. She was also in American Samoa for the funeral of the late Fa’atamali’i Sooto, whose life was claimed in the tsunami.

She is a former Miss LelaleleioSamoa, winner of the scholarship pageant hosted by the United Samona Organization of Hawaii (USOH). She won the Miss Samoa USA title unopposed last year and represented the US in the Sept. 4 Miss Samoa competition.

“I never thought in a million years I’d go to the Miss South Pacific Pageant...it started from the Miss Lelaleiosamoa scholarship pageant and now this chance,” she said. “I get the chance to meet the other contestants, taste the food there...it’ll be exciting. I’ve never been to Fiji before.”

Pomele thanks everyone, all her families in American Samoa and Samoa and all her friends for their support.

As Miss Samoa she plans to work with the youth and find ways to help Motootua Hospital. After the Miss South Pacific pageant she plans to return to Hawaii to handle some school and military matters and will move to Samoa to serve out her reign.

“I’ll do my best and have God guide me in this journey...I will serve to promote Samoa and the culture of the islands throughout the whole world,” Pomele says. “It’s a new exciting challenge.”

Jasmine...Ms American Samoa coverage by numerous times? Have you read the samoanews since American Samoa Pagent was in its running phase? During the pagent we've only seen approximately 3 pictures from the pagent. We didn't even know the contestants until the samoanews release an issues (maybe) a week or few days before the pagent. This is first time Samoannews failed to meet their yearly standards of providing coverage about Ms. American Samoa Pagent. When the pagent was done and Ms. Lorisa Mata'utia was crowned as new Ms. American Samoa....that was the last we heard about this poor girl. And yes I completely agree with SAMOANEWS BEING BIAS! Even if MASI were unorganized this year, yet Samoanews should and must always do what they're design to do and that is to report. And please name one "other" media coverage that Ms. Mata'utia was even mentioned?...NOTHING!

To: GOOD LUCK my freind!... no we dont get your drift. Just because someone is born in America doesn't change where they came from. If their parents are from Samoa then they are Samoans and have every right to compete. Bad analogy.

Jasmine Laumoli- Bias or not, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, so when you decide to put your name on here, great for you! It is simple here, the public is interested in why there has been no coverage on our Ms American Samoa, no more no less. Samoanews have provided an answer to one of the comments on here, so there's the end of it. Thank you Samoanews. Good luck to all the contestants, and Jasmine- Its Lorisa Mata'utia, not Laurissa! I totally agree with ya all. I was hoping to find news and pictures of our beautiful Miss American Samoa in the paper but nada. Not only is a slap in the face for the Miss Mata'utia family but our country as well. She is our new Miss American Samoa either you like it or not. Post those pictures and news of Miss Mata'utia please.

Hmmmmm, photo was taken by our local reporter Tina Mataafa? She, herself, flew all the way to Mulinu'u, Samoa for this specific occasion? So, is this Tina Mataafa flying to Fiji to cover the Ms South Pacific, specifically Ms Samoa? Quite a predicament here, don't you think so Samoanews? With all the comments on this article and still not a note from the editor or who ever is responsible for approving these comments on any of them to at least provide an explanation on why there has been absolutely no coverage on our Ms American Samoa? It's kind of obvious when you report the same thing on the same individual, its all repetition, it gets old too.... [Editor's note:  Yes the reporter Mata'afa took the photo Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009 at Sails in Mulinu’u, Samoa. She was in Samoa covering a number of stories for SN.  As for the lack of coverage for Miss American Samoa, this was addressed in today's article entitled 'Just Asking..."  Here it is again:

JUST ASKING
Why is Samoa News covering Miss Samoa and yet has little or no news about Miss American Samoa and the Miss South Pacific Pageant?
SAMOA NEWS ANSWERS:
Samoa News has tried to set up an interview with Miss American Samoa over the last month, especially about her upcoming participation in The Miss South Pacific Pageant being held in Fiji — to no avail. We contacted Fiji Times, which out of courtesy from one news agency to another, sent us photos of Miss American Samoa’s arrival, as well as the other contestants (See Samoa News issue, Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009).
Miss Samoa, however granted us an interview, via telephone, from the Pago Pago International Airport (See Samoa News issue, Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009— page 8). Further, Samoa’s Tourism Authority (STA) notified media, including Samoa News, of the resignation of their Miss Samoa (see Community Briefs, Nov. 12, 2009 SN issue).
Miss Samoa, during her Samoa News interview, gave us the date of when she was leaving for the pageant. Through Fiji Times.com, Samoa News found that Miss American Samoa was to arrive in Fiji before Miss Samoa. Samoa News then contacted Fiji Times to see if we could get a photo of Miss American Samoa arriving in Fiji.
For our readers, we will be keeping in touch with Fiji Times to get news and photos of how Miss American Samoa is doing during the pageant events, as well as any photos of the event.
It should be noted Samoa News has received no contact, photos or press releases from the local organization that handles the Miss American Samoa schedule and events.]

Wow some very interesting and "surprising" commentary from the public. I think Samoanews is doing an excellent job as far as covering current events happening in American Samoa, Apia Samoa as well as the mainland. In my own opinion, I think the word BIAS should not be associated with Samoanews. I believe they are doing their job with reporting what is happening as far news in many areas, the pacific pageantry simply being one of them. Our newly crowned Miss American Samoa Laurissa Mata'utia’s current happenings have been reported by Samoanews numerous times. I find it a bit surprising and sad that some of our own people would feel disgruntled by this simple issue. Coverage for our Miss American Samoa had always been provided as such. Why would you one to start and spread hostility to one of your own? It is nice and a good gesture to find that the Miss Samoa is also acknowledged in our local newspaper. I am sure our own Miss American Samoa would be highlighted in other newspapers and media coverage in places outside of Samoa. Also I would like to respond to the one who commented about several MASI winners being residents of LEONE. I am a proud Moso’oipala & Fa’asaulala teine and I resent the one who sarcastically insulted the Leone village name. I was taught by my elders to be forgiving towards those who act insensibly and to also be helpful to them. So here’s a little advice I learned growing up in Leone &Vailoatai: “O Leone lava e a’oa’o ai amio lelei o tupulaga…tautala ma se ava…o le TUALA e sa le fo’i!” lol! But seriously, try to conduct yourself more appropriately and if you want to do name-calling then do state your name at the end of the joke ‘kay?=) I would simply like to congratulate both Miss American Samoa (Ms. Mata'utia) & Miss Samoa (Ms. Pomele) for being excellent role models for the people of Samoa-na-lua thus far. I wish you both the best of luck with upcoming Miss South Pacific Pageant in Fiji. Ieova tautai oulua ala ma ia oulua fa'amoemoe ia te ia mo mea uma! God be with you and may God be with Samoa-na-lua! Ma le fa’aaloalo tele, Jasmine Laumoli

I don't know why everyone is making such a big deal out of why the newspaper didn't say anything about our own Ms. American Samoa. I mean...they did say that she was going to leave and compete. What else more is there to say? I mean c'mon...don't make such a big fuss out of these small things. It's good to also support our fellow countries. So good luck to both Ms. SAMOA and Ms. American Samoa.

It's not Samoa News' fault. The MASI and AS tourism office are in shambles right now. They seriously need a new corporate strategy to revamp their efforts. They look so dull and lazy now. And who cares if Leone keeps coming up in pageant loops. They're competitive in everything: politics, sports, business... gosh.... get a life. LMAO!

its funny that SAMOA, always seems to be getting winners from the mainland...sad. what? the girls from Samoa itself can't compete, and aren't good enough? You don't see AMERIKA SAMOA, using girls with Big Roots from APIA to represent AM. SAMOA...getting my drift. I recall the last Miss South Pacific Pagent that was held here, that Samoa had, Samoa's Miss, was basically from American Samoa. Malo lava le taumafai. shoot, might as well, just have a "ms. samoa pagent from the mainland, to represnt Samoa" Pagent. To our VERY own Ms. American Samoa, good luck sis. win or lose, we are still very proud of you.

HECK YEAH LEILUA! I'm with you on that one, as mentioned by AveMaOe, Samoanews continues to provide coverage on Ms Samoa and have yet to mention anything on Ms American Samoa. I have nothing against Ms Samoa, but come on Samoa News. Samoa Live News and Samoa Observer (both Samoa media) has not provided any coverage on our Ms American Samoa but their very own Ms Samoa, and for you to continuously provide coverage on Ms Samoa seems BIAS and more of like kiss a**, to whom though? This is totally a slap in the face to our Ms American Samoa and her family. I am very disappointed in your newspaper.
