Vatia man attempting to stop runaway truck loses his life

A 49-year-old truck driver from Vatia died Friday afternoon as a result of an accident in Satala, and the Department of Public Safety is continuing its investigation, says Commissioner William Bill Haleck in response to Samoa News queries Friday evening.

Samoa News spoke to one witness who viewed the tragic incident. According to Mata Siona who was heading east to drop off a delivery to stores on the East Side. “As we approached Satala, I saw a container truck coming down from the hill, but I was shocked because there was no driver.”

“I stopped my truck, then I saw a man running towards the container truck with a rock and he attempted to place the rock near the tire so the container truck can stop, however the attempt was unsuccessful as the truck ran over the rock. The driver tried to get into the truck however his leg hit something, and he landed flat on his face, then the car [tractor part of truck] went over his head.”

Fighting back his tears, Siona of Petesa said he had goosebumps at the time of the incident. He further said, the truck went straight into a fence where it stopped, however there was nothing he and other bystanders could do for the driver as he was already motionless. Samoa News spoke to Siona the day after the incident and he said he hasn’t slept since the tragic incident occurred.

In the meantime, the Commissioner stated that investigations are underway to find out why the truck moved or ‘ran a way’.

Samoa News wishes to convey its deepest condolences to the mourning family.
