USDOE to provide adult education funding for insular areas

The U.S. Department of Education has allocated just over $1 million in adult education funds for four Pacific insular areas for fiscal year 2012.

American Samoa is estimated to get $247,297; Guam  $434,542; the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands $359,594; and Palau $22,878, according to the agency’s distribution list.

The federal department says this funding will be available July 1, this year and is awarded under the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA), enacted as Title II of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 1998.

This is the principal source of federal support for adult basic and literacy education programs for adults who lack basic skills, a high school diploma, or proficiency in English.

AEFLA funds are distributed by formula to states using Census data on the number of adults (ages 16 and older) in each state who lack a high school diploma and who are not enrolled in school.  States must match 25 percent of the federal contribution with state or local funds.
