US Fellowships aid in Samoa’s development

APIA — Two state solicitors and one NUS language lecturer were given a warm send off by U.S. Ambassador David Huebner during his recent visit to Samoa last week. Cecily Jemima Fa’asau and Fa’aniniva Edelma Niumata are two state solicitors participating in a six week Pacific Fellows Women’s Rights Program in Washington D.C.

The program will educate and inform young lawyers from around the South Pacific on steps they can take in their home countries to effect positive change to benefit the legal needs of women and their communities and empower women in protecting their legal rights.

The program is supported by the U.S. Government, the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative and the University of the South Pacific.

Separately, Rossana Mauala, a language lecturer in the NUS Faculty of Education, will be attending an English language program that focuses on developing teaching English language skills. The trip includes participation in the 2012 TESOL Conference in Philadelphia. Rossana will be joined by English teachers from all over the world.

The three participants were all selected due to their past record of performance and their demonstrated leadership and teamwork capabilities.  One of the goals of these programs is to encourage these women to teach and share what they have learned with the larger Samoan community.  All three women said they are very excited about their trip to the States and cannot wait to share what they will be learning during their programs.
