Undefeated Leone Lions, Tafuna Warriors have yet to meet in girls volleyball

With one and a half weeks left until the end of the regular season of the American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) girls volleyball season, the top two teams in the Varsity Division, the Leone Lions (6-0) and Tafuna Warriors (5-0) have yet to meet. They were originally scheduled to meet last Monday November 5, but unfortunately due to the weather the game was cancelled and no doubt will be rescheduled for another time before the playoffs.

In the latest action that took place this past Wednesday, the Lions played host to the Kanana Fou Stallions. The Varsity Lions managed to stay undefeated when they downed the Stallions in two sets. The Stallions were able to take the Lions to the edge of defeat, but came up just shy, with the Lions walking away with a hard fought win; 29-27 and 27-25.

The Junior Varsity Stallions won in their match up with relative ease downing the Lions, 17-25 and 10-25. With the Varsity Lions dominating this season so far, their counterpart Junior Varsity team has not been so lucky, as they are at the bottom of their standings with only one win.

The other game on Wednesday had the Samoana Sharks hosting the South Pacific Academy Dolphins in a Varsity match up, while also having the Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats visiting for a Junior Varsity game against the Sharks. In the Varsity game, the winless Dolphins stepped up their play and forced three sets out of the ASHSAA defending champion Sharks. But in the end, it was the Sharks who pulled out the win, 25-13, 17-25 and 25-12.

The Junior Varsity games saw a slight upset when the Sharks handed the Wildcats their second loss of the season in the Junior Varsity division. This is the second loss in a row for the Wildcats who had won their first six games of the season, before dropping two straight with the first one coming last Friday courtesy of the Stallions. This latest loss on Wednesday, had the Wildcats being downed by the Sharks in three sets, 25-15, 16-25 and 15-11.

With the loss, the Wildcats still stand alone at the top of the Junior Varsity standings, pending the outcome of today’s match up that will be against the Warriors who are in second place at this time. This game will be played out at Tafuna High School, which should give the Warriors the advantage over the Wildcats.

The teams to keep an eye on in the Varsity Division with one and half weeks left in the regular season before the playoffs are, the Faga’itua Vikings and Sharks. Both of these teams have improved on their play the past two weeks to stay in the top four, which will advance to the playoffs. They both have a good shot at the playoffs, because they are not scheduled to meet again in the rest of the regular season.

In the Junior Varsity Division, the Wildcats appear to be cracking slightly with the two back to back loses, with the Warriors waiting patiently to counter the Wildcats mistakes who appear to be on a downward slide at this time.

Today’s games will have the Fa’asoa Marist Cougars going all of the way to the East Side to take on the Vikings, while the Warriors go head to head with Wildcats at Tafuna High School. Each game has a scheduled starting time of 4:30 p.m.
