Uchino joins AG's Office, Criminal Division

Assistant Attorney General Masaya Uchino is the newest member of the American Samoa Bar Association and Attorney General's Office, Criminal Division.

Uchino was recently sworn in to the ASBA by Chief Justice Michael Kruse.

He is from New York, and holds a bachelors degree in Politics and Economics from Brandeis University, where he graduated with honors.

He worked in Washington DC for two years in the human rights advocacy field and then attended law school at the University of California Hastings, College of the Law. While in law school, Uchino worked for the San Francisco District Attorney's Office for two years and part of his education required him to live in Japan, Argentina, the Netherlands and Haiti to study their respective criminal justice systems.

After passing the California Bar Exam and before moving to American Samoa, Uchino worked at Teraoka & Partners, a firm in San Francisco.

Uchino said he came to American Samoa to try something new. "The island is beautiful and everyone has been incredibly friendly and welcoming. I plan to stay for two years."

Deputy AG Mitzie Jessop, who oversees the criminal division at the Attorney General’s Office, said Uchino will be a great asset to the AG’s Office and she looks forward to working with him.
