TWO POPPED FOR ALLEGEDLY SMUGGLING MARIJUANA ON LADY NAOMI

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) arrested a sailor and a man awaiting him at the dock for allegedly smuggling marijuana into the territory yesterday after the vessel, the Lady Naomi, came into port.

Samoa News understands DPS Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division and Vice and Narcotics Division, acted on a tip, and were on standby across from the wharf monitoring the sailor and the man who picked up the package.

Witnesses told Samoa News that after the Customs Agents and Immigration cleared all the passengers, the sailor allegedly walked out with a package and handed it over to the man, who then drove away in his red Toyota Tacoma.

It's alleged as the man drove away, the police followed him to the parking lot of Tedi’s Fagatogo Square, and that’s when police searched his vehicle. Samoa News understands a search warrant was executed and police uncovered the package, which contained a green leafy substance that tested positive as marijuana.

Samoa News was present when the man and the sailor were taken into the Police Station for questioning. The package allegedly contained three wrapped bundles of marijuana, with a street value of more than $10,000.

The Vice and Narcotics Division is working on the police report to be forwarded to the Attorney General’s office for prosecution.

The two men are now being held at the Tafuna Correctional Facility (TCF) for 48 hours, and if, at the end of the 48 hours they haven’t been served with an arrest warrant, they will be released from jail.

Deputy Commissioner Leiseau Laumoli could not be immediately reached for a comment.
