Ofu man medivaced to LBJ after lawn mowing accident

A 64-year-old male from Ofu, Manu'a got a good scare when he had to be medically evacuated to the LBJ Hospital Emergency Room yesterday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. after three toes on his right foot were severed due to a lawn mowing accident.

Due to the seriousness of the injury, Dr. J. Tuitele, the on-duty physician at the Tafuna Health Clinic during the time of the incident, accompanied Segaula pilot Captain Michael Tennant to Ofu to evaluate the patient prior to transport.

The patient was reported to be in stable condition with no complications upon his arrival in the territory.

Many Manu'a residents continue to praise the free medivac services provided by the Department of Health and of course, transportation provided by the government owned Segaula and its pilot, Tennant.

Unfortunately, Tennant has turned in his two-month resignation notice and plans to move back to the US mainland with his wife at the end of the month. Who will replace him or the fate of the free medivac service is to date unknown.

In the meantime, Tennant continues to exemplify dedication and great service to the people of Tutuila and Manu'a by transporting those involved in official government business and those in need of immediate medical assistance.

Tennant will leave with some fond memories of American Samoa. Just last week, he presented a sort of farewell gift to Manu'a District Governor Tufele Li'amatua. During his time in the sky, Tennant has snapped numerous breathtaking aerial shots of the Manu'a Islands, some of which were presented to Tufele.

Tennant's last day on the job is Dec. 31.
