TEO to mentor SPA and Nu’uuli VoTech

Following Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga’s initiative presented at the recent cabinet meeting, called  the “Adopt a School” program, TEO Acting Director Tim Jones went to South Pacific Academy on Friday, April 26 to inform the school about the governor’s directive, and to ask how TEO could be of help to the school. The governor had instructed his directors to choose a school and help that school in whatever capacity their department was able.

Jones met with SPA principal Evelyn Lili’o-Satele and the senior graduating class of 2013 (pictured), and together they inspected the solar panels which were previously installed at SPA. (The panels can be seen on the rooftops in the background). The acting director told Samoa News that the panels were putting out 1.3 kilowatts of power while he was there, and that helps to lower the cost of the school’s utility bill.

He and the staff then set up a time when Jones could return to the school to hold a question and answer period with the students regarding sustainable energy. One of the students, according to Jones, challenged him to discuss nuclear power, as the student is planning to go into the Navy’s nuclear program.

The acting director is also hoping to visit Nuuuli VochTech to aid them with their energy needs, and work with the students to understand the possibilities regarding renewable energy in the territory. He plans to join the Parent-Teacher Associations in each school to further this effort.
