Students to attend national leadership conference

Two members of the Student Government Association (SGA) at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) will represent the Territory at the National Center for Student Leaders (NCSL) fall 2013 conference, which will take place between November 21st and 24th in New Orleans.

SGA Secretary Anna Sewell and SGA Treasurer Visa Vaiau have been chosen by their peers to attend the event, after which they will have earned the designation of Certified Student Leaders.

The NCSL anticipates approximately 700 student leaders from across the nation will attend the conference, which will mark the 75th Assembly of the organization. Participating students will have a choice of 20 guest speakers to choose from, who will cover topics ranging from goal setting to team-building, negotiation, storytelling, the art of listening, critical thinking, meeting management, and more.

“The learning that takes place at NCSL enables each individual to return to campus better equipped to contribute to their campus and to their communities,” explains the official NCSL press release for the event.

For Visa Vaiau, 19, the conference means a chance to develop her leadership skills. “I’m grateful to attend this conference, and I hope to gain as much knowledge and leadership skills as possible so that I can practice these skills in the near future,” she said. Visa has gone through the list of presenters and topics, and selected three she considers must-sees – “How to Deal with Difficult People” by Nancy Hunter Denney, “Money Management for Leaders” by Peter Bielagus, and “Stop Setting Goals: Start Achieving Them” by Hoan Do.

In addition to her duties as SGA Secretary, Anna Sewell, 21, currently plans to major in Nursing. She considers attending the NCSL event a “golden opportunity,” and like Visa she intends to gather useful ideas on leadership. “This conference will teach me how to become a better leader and how to teach others,” Anna reflected. Both Anna and Visa were selected on the basis of their commitment and dedication to their respective positions within the SGA.

The National Center for Student Leadership was founded in 1978 to provide leadership development opportunities to college student leaders and campus professionals from across the country and around the world. The Center equips collegiate student leaders and their advisors with comprehensive tools to achieve their leadership potential and positively impact their campuses and communities through practical, focused training and opportunities to collaborate with other student leaders.

Over the years, the NCSL has become best known for its bi-annual leadership conferences every spring and fall. Each conference offers in-depth workshops on leadership topics chosen for their relevance to the skills young leaders need to succeed on campus and beyond.
