Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — This past Monday, special education students from local schools (elementary and high school level) were at the Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tafuna to try out for events that will be offered during the upcoming Special Olympic Games.

The 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games will be held March 14-21, 2019 in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, a world-class city with a rich cultural and sporting history.

American Samoa is preparing to send a delegation of athletes, coaches and chaperones to the Middle East to compete. Fundraisers have been held by the local Special Olympics Committee — the most recent one was held last month at the Fale Laumei and hosted by the comedic duo of Tofiga and Pani — to help raise much needed money for the trip.

The names of the athletes selected to go to the Special Olympic Games are yet to be announced and confirmed.

The 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games is a multi-sport event for athletes with intellectual disabilities in the tradition of the Special Olympics movement.
