Secret plans to set up Pacific Islands Super Rugby Team revealed

Popular NZ outlet Newshub has revealed that there are secret plans in place to create a combined Pacific Islands rugby team, with the New Zealand Government funding an NZ$80,000 feasibility study.

The team would be made up of players from Fiji, Samoa and Tonga, and would play in the Super Rugby competition.

Under the plan, the team would be based in Suva, as Fiji is the biggest country. It would also play some ‘home’ games in Samoa, Tonga, Auckland and Sydney.

The new team would be set up as an independent franchise and enter the competition in 2021. The plan has gone to Fiji, Samoa and Tonga for consideration, and it will likely also be discussed at a SANZAR board meeting in London in the coming days.

Players and fans have been calling for a Pacific Island team for a very long time. A huge step forward that would be absolutely fantastic for the global game if it came to fruition. And they’ve already got their first recruit…
