Sailing opens racing season with Memorial Day regatta

PAGO PAGO HARBOR — The Sailing Association of American Samoa Inc. (SAASI) began its 2018 racing season with a regatta Memorial Day. Offshore winds were variable out of the North and provided challenging conditions for the twelve sailors racing in the Laser and Optimist classes that afternoon.

Six sailors sailed two races in the Laser class with final rankings calculated by points from placing in the two races. An additional tie-breaker was needed for first place between Christian Lorenzo and Georgia Cox. Christian placed first, Georgia placed second, followed by Victor Chen in third.

Six sailors sailed three races in the Optimist class with rankings calculated from the two best scores per sailor. Carlos Sanchez placed first, followed by Jojo Spitzenberg in second place, and Carneal Satele. This is the first racing season for both Carlos and Jojo in the Optimist class.

Coach Matt Erickson noted, “We are very proud to have such a talented group of homegrown sailors. Everyone sailed with such talent on this day and I am very impressed with our new sailors. They all exceeded my expectations as a Coach. Some of our sailors are new to the sport and starting out in the Optimist and some of our returning sailors are new to the Laser class. It always impresses me how naturally sailing comes to these young people who have grown up surrounded by water. But it is no surprise when they get on a sailboat and understand exactly what to do, it’s in their blood!"

SAASI would like to thank the sailors and their families for their assistance during the races and especially MANUA’S, SADIE’S by the SEA, and TUTUILA STORE for their continuing support of sailing.
