The Tafuna Jets are suddenly in the mix for the men’s 2016 FFAS National League championship title after a 2-1 win over two-time defending champs Utulei Youth on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Pago Park Soccer Stadium.

In the other Top 5 game it was a 1-1 draw between Lion Heart and Vaiala Tongan, while both Bottom 5 games ended in forfeited wins for Ilaoa & To’omata over Royal Puma and Black Roses over PanSa.

TOP 5 GROUP TAFUNA JETS 2, UTULEI YOUTH 1

Tafuna struck first with a Mila Osa goal in the first 10 minutes of the game.

However, a goalie mistake by KB Mariota in the same half had Utulei Youth equalize on an Elama Fa’atonu shot from outside that slipped through the goalie’s hands, and into the back of the net.

Pouono Samuelu scored the game-winner after dribbling past three defenders to shoot from deep inside the penalty box.

Both teams had multiple opportunities in the second half, but the Tafuna Jets were able to hold on for the win.

Pago Youth, idle over the weekend, faces off against the Jets this Saturday, and is leading the Top 5 group with six points off of two wins. Tafuna is second with four points from two games, followed by Utulei Youth with three points from two games, and Vaiala Tongan at No. 4 with two points from three games. Lion Heart is last in the Top 5 with a point from three games.

LION HEART 1, VAIALA TONGAN 1

Lion Heart started the game with 10 players, and ended it with 10 players after a red card near the end of the first half.

They only had 10 players to start the game, and still managed to score first with a goal by Hiva Tuulau. Lion Heart would then have a full squad in the first half, but a red card saw that number reduced just minutes from the break.

In the second, Fusi Malani equalized for Vaiala Tongan, earning their second draw of the Top 5 group stage.

BOTTOM 5 GROUP

Ilaoa & To’omata leads the group with six points from two games, while Black Roses is second with five from three games. Green Bay was idle over the weekend with three points, followed by Royal Puma at No. 4 with one point, and PanSa rounding it out at No. 5 with a point as well.
