SECOND ASHSAA WRESTLING SEASON BEGINS TOMORROW

The American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) 2nd wrestling season, will be having its first tournament tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Leone high school gymnasium, with all of the local high schools that have teams participating.

This year, there will be a total of 9 schools with teams, with last year’s six schools participating again — Samoana, Nu’uuli VocTech, Tafuna, Kanana Fou, Fa’asao Marist and Leone. The three new schools are the South Pacific Academy Dolphins, the Manumalo Baptist Academy Flames and all of the way from the East Side, the Faga’itua Vikings.

Tafuna captured the 2010-2011 overall championship title, despite the Leone Lions dominating the whole season last year.

Samoana, despite their participation last year, is coming in once again with a very young team, mainly made up of first year wrestlers, who are either Freshmen or Sophomores.

Despite this being the Vikings first year, in the oldest sport in the world, they will have one of the more physical teams, due to many of their football players transitioning over onto the mat, which is the same thing that Tafuna is doing as well, in an attempt to keep the ASHSAA Wrestling Championship title at their school.

Leone will be returning a few of their standouts from last season while vying for the championship title and will be looking not to falter at the end of the season as they did last year, allowing the title to escape from their hands after dominating the whole regular season.

Fa’asao, Kanana Fou and Nu’uuli VocTech, will most likely stir the pot a little, as they are constantly improving — keeping the rest of the teams on their toes, which will make this an interesting season without a doubt.

Here are the final standings for each team in last year’s 2010-2011 debut season:

1st -Tafuna

2nd -Leone

3rd -Samoana

4th -VocTech

5th -Fa’asao

6th -Kanana Fou
