Scouts Fiafia Day, a time for fun & brotherhood

As the Boys Scouts of American (BSA) program continues to grow in American Samoa, an official of the BSA from Honolulu reminded local scout troops that scouting builds a person’s character and helps them to become a good citizen.

Jeff Sulzbach, Aloha Council Scout executive and CEO from Honolulu, was the special guest during weekend activities of the American Samoa District Boys Scouts celebration, starting Saturday morning with the annual Scouts Fiafia Day at Lions Park.

The local Boys Scout program falls under the jurisdiction of the Aloha Council.

In his remarks, Sulzbach told scouts that he was “impressed … to see enthusiasm and the brotherhood of scouting you all share together” as troops gathered around 7a.m. to prepare for a short parade.

He says Scouting is a worldwide program, adding that next year Japan will host the Scout jamboree, for scouts from around the world. “Perhaps that’s something that some of you might consider attending next year,” Sulzbach told the audience which included scout leaders, parents and family members.

“You might be asked, why are you a scout, or why am I a scout?” he said. “Number one, you’re in scouting because it’s fun. I hope you can make it fun every day.”

He went on to say that there are three things to remember about being a Scout and number one is being a good citizen, “taking care of the community you live in, our great country and the world we live in. And we can do that every day as Scouts.

“We also are here to build our bodies, to help ourselves become strong - physically and mentally. In Scouting you can do that,” he said. “Lastly, we develop our character - what’s inside of us - our soul, who we are as people.

“So as you think about your Scouting journey, I hope you think of how you do those things as scouts,” he said.

Lt. Gov. Lemanu Peleti Mauga, who is also the acting governor, spoke on behalf of the government and people of American Samoa. He told scout troops that this program is a success with the support of parents and family members, who turned out for Saturday’s event.

Prior to Saturday’s event, Rep. Larry Sanitoa, chairman of the BSA American Samoa District, says Lemanu is a registered member of Boys Scouts with extensive service and support to local youth.

Sanitoa says Scouts Fiafia event is a fun filled day of activities that challenge the ability and skills of all the scouts. “The event focuses on a time of enjoyment and fun for scouts of all ages,” he said.

Then last Saturday evening, American Samoa District hosted a dinner for the guests from Hawaii to honor Mote Si’ufanua, who is “one of our dedicated and committed district leaders,” Sanitoa said.

Si’ufanua was presented the Silver Beaver award and this recognition is a council-level award given to registered members who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council, Sanitoa said.
