SAMOA'S ANZAC DAY HONORS SOLDIERS' SACRIFICES FOR PEOPLE AND COUNTRY

Kirifi Muta, a Samoan killed in Afghanistan in 2011 as a soldier in Australia’s military was mentioned in Samoa's commemoration of ANZAC Day.The dawn ceremony began with a service in Rev. Penimani said, the best gift offered is to sacrifice your life for your people and country.Rev. Penimani, a Samoa who served in the New Zealand military for 16 years led the service quoting memoirs by survivors of the Gallipoli campaign in World War I.He quoted a medic who watched his comrades fall: “There were medics available but getting out to the wounded was like walking to one’s death, so all we did was watch.”“Sacrifice is the best gift one could offer for a country, for people and for family,” said Rev. Peniamina.Head of State Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi and Her Highness Filifilia, Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, members of the diplomatic corps and relatives of war veterans attended the dawn service.The services started in front of the Nelson Memorial town clock where wreaths were placed to honour the veterans of war, followed by breakfast at the RSA.Prime Minister Tuilaepa acknowledged the “unique service” rendered by all countries including Samoa in the United Nations Peacekeeping programme.Australia’s High Commissioner His Excellency Dr. Stephen Henningham gave the keynote address.“Today we honour the memory of those who lost their lives serving their country.” said Dr. HanninghamHe saluted the sacrifice made and the commitment of countries to uphold peace.
