Police in San Diego are still investigating the fatal shooting death of Vaafuti Togiailua, a 41-year-old Samoan rugby player turned assistant coach for the Old Mission Bay Athletic Club (OMBAC) rugby team who was shot six times in the chest and head last month inside his car, only two blocks away from his apartment in Golden Hill.

According to nbcsandiego.com, “This is the second such brutal killing in the OMBAC organization in as many years. Last April, well-known San Diego architect Graham Downes was beaten to death by a coworker. Vaa and Downes were teammates.”

News reports state that people who didn’t even know Vaa have left memorials for him, with members of the community remembering the coach as a devoted father and a man with a heart.

“San Diego Police are searching for the motorcyclist who witnesses say pulled the trigger,” reports nbcsandiego.com, adding that the victim was on his way to work when the suspect parked beside the car and fired in the driver-side window.

Because Vaa is Samoan, almost all his family members reside overseas so the team banded together to raise money to fly them there. The efforts netted more than $12,000 and the goal was to return Vaa’s remains to Samoa for burial.
