Samoa toasts 50 years of independence

Samoa is not only celebrating the new year but 50 years of governance since gaining independence from New Zealand in 1962.For decades, Samoa was subjected to British, German and New Zealand colonial rule and after years of lobbying to a reluctant United Nations the people of Samoa voted for independence. This came after a peaceful resistance movement, The Mau, was set up in the early 1900s, enraging New Zealand administrators who rounded up leaders and sent them into exile.
