Samoa to restore use of apostrophes and macrons

Symbols determining the meaning and pronunciation of Samoan words will be restored in the written language and teaching of Samoan in schools.

The use of apostrophes and macrons in Samoan words were removed in the 1960s by the Ministry of Education.

Our correspondent, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia, says the move to restore the symbols follows concerns from the prime minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi.

“The big change in pronunciation of Samoan words not only by the students but some of the broadcasters, the Samoan language and pronunciation is really bad.”

Autagavaia says the move has been welcomed by many.
