Samoa and NZ consider double tax agreement

Samoans earning a living in New Zealand may not have to pay income tax in Samoa under a proposed double tax agreement between the two countries.The idea was raised during discussions at the sixth New Zealand/Samoa Joint Ministerial Consultations in Wellington this week where Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi met the New Zealand foreign minister Murray McCully.The two agreed that negotiating such a tax agreement would assist investment between the two countries.A double tax agreement would also apply to New Zealander’s earning money in Samoa.The pair also discussed other measures to boost the economies of the two nations before the PM's visit ended.The Prime Minister visited to mark the 50th anniversary of the treaty of friendship between the two countries.The visit gave the two countries an opportunity to cover a wide range of regional issues affecting both countries. Key topics included continuing to encourage Fiji to hold elections in 2014, and the possibility of increasing trade between the two countries.The Prime Minister has now left for Sydney where he will open a new consulate office.
