The investigation into a letter alleging widespread corruption within the police force – especially among prison staff at Tafa’igata Prison – has taken another turn.This time, the Team assigned to investigate the letter has been asked to investigate the allegations further.The instructions “investigate further following their preliminary investigations” come from the Office of the Attorney General.In response to an email from the Samoa Observer on 12th December 2012, Attorney General Aumua Ming Leung Wai said the report is yet to be finalised.“In respect of the ghost letter, there were several matters that my Office had told the Investigating Team to investigate further following their preliminary investigation,” said Aumua.What those “several matters” are, Aumua did not elaborate.But he said that“my office is now awaiting the joint report from the Investigating Team.“As you are aware, the Investigating Team consists of two Police Officers from the Police’s Professional Standard Unit (PSU) and a representative of the Ombudsman (office).” It was not possible to obtain a comment from the Ombudsman’s Office yesterday.The letter in question surfaced last year. Sent to the Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, copies of the letter were given to some Government Ministries, the Samoa Victim Support Group and the Samoa Observer.The letter written by an anonymous writer alleged immoral sexual activities between inmates at the Taf’aigata Prison and some police officers.
