Rotary’s Four-Way Test Awards

Twelve young men and women, members of the 2013 graduating class, have been selected by the Rotary Club of Pago Pago to receive the 2013 Rotary Four-Way Test Award which recognizes high moral and ethical character.

According to Dennis Wellborn, president elect of the Rotary Club, eleven of the winning students and their parents were recognized at a banquet dinner held in their honor.

Each of the selected students, all seniors, received a certificate of achievement, a letter attesting to their high moral and ethical character and a cash award of $100.

It’s important to note that Four-Way Test winners were selected to receive the award by their peers, the students in their respective schools.

Wellborn explains that the Four-Way Test is a philosophy created by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor in 1932 when Taylor was asked to take charge of a company that was failing.

The eventual survival of that failing company was attributed in large part to the adoption of a 24-word code in its everyday business practices.

“Mr. Taylor’s code was formally adopted by Rotary International as the 4-Way Test in 1943; its purpose is to provide principles for the ethical foundation of good business,” Wellborn said. “These principles are also a solid foundation for all, including the younger generation, such as you, upon which to build a successful life.”

This is the Rotary Four-Way-Test:

Of the things we think, say or do:

1) Is it the truth?

2) Is it fair to all concerned?

3) Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4) Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Fono Representative Larry Sanitoa was the main speaker for the evening and assisted in the presentation of the awards.

The local Rotary Club has presented this award to seniors from public and private high schools for the past 28 years, who, by a vote of their fellow classmates are recognized as those best exemplifying the principles of the Rotary Four-Way-Test.

“These young men and women and their parents have a great deal to be proud of for being recognized by their peers, those who know them best, as adhering to the highest moral and ethical character and standards in their everyday associations,” said the Rotary president elect.
