Register next week to take part in this year’s Holiday Music Festival

The American Samoa Council on Arts, Culture, and Humanities (ASCACH) will be hosting the 36th Annual Holiday Music Festival themed “Celebrating Christmas in the Spirit of Music” on Dec. 16-17, 2013 at the Malaeoletalu Fagatogo Pavilion.

Rexx Yandall, the program coordinator at the Jean P. Hayden Museum said yesterday that this year’s auditions will have very strict criteria, to ensure fairness for everyone involved.

Yandall explained that once a group registers, they will be scheduled for an audition which will determine if they will be performing during the Music Festival.

This year, Yandall said they have 11 slots open and some of the criteria they will be judged on include artistic value, gracefulness of the performers, unity, quality of voices, discipline, enter and exit, appropriateness of the message (holiday theme), and obeying the 15-minute time limit.

One very important factor that needs to be considered, said Yandall, is that all interested groups MUST include 30 or more members.

The auditions will be judged by a panel of individuals not yet confirmed, but most likely will include local musicians.

The program is open to all church youth groups, Sunday school classes, offices and any other groups interested in sharing their musical talents.

Yandall explained that the reason why they had to limit this year’s number of performers to 11, is because they are collaborating with the Department of Youth and Women’s Affairs, which will  be selecting 11 groups of their own, for a total of 22 performances altogether.

Registration is free of charge and will be open all next week from Monday, Nov. 18 - Friday, Nov. 22 at the Jean P. Hayden Museum compound in Fagatogo.

No telephone registrations will be accepted.
