Samoa police give up hopes village will hand over suspects

Apia, SAMOA — Samoan police have given up hopes that the Salelologa village will hand over five suspects after last week's brawl with youths of the neighboring Salelavalu village.

A police spokesperson said the names of five suspects were given to the village chiefs and orators of Salelologa last week after interviewing eye witnesses.

The police said they would apprehend the suspects this week.

The investigation is also focussed on the damages to small business vendor's goods and belongings caused at Salelologa market last Monday.

Only two youths from Salelavalu village have been charged and will appear in court in two weeks' time.

Samoan Prime Minister and Minister of Police, Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, said he thinks one of the causes of youths being involved in committing these offences in Savaii was the consumption of hard liquor.

The prime minister, in his weekly radio interview, said the government, through the Liquor Board, will consider the alcohol level in locally produced vodka brands.
