Samoa's agriculture minister hopes the country's first poultry farm and a piggery will reduce its reliance on imported meat.

Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polata'ivao says the World Bank-funded farm and piggery will open in two weeks at the agriculture ministry's livestock facilities at Vailima.

Samoa imports 40 containers of chicken every month.

Laaulialemalietoa said the initiative is part of a programme to support livestock producers and commercialise the pork and chicken industries.
