Apia, SAMOA — Samoa Airways is on the verge of flying direct to Brisbane Australia as the rebranded national carrier begins her expansion journey "slowly but surely," Airlines Minister Lautafi Fio Selafi Purcell assured the nine contestants vying for the 2018 McDonald's Samoa Miss Samoa crown next week in Salelologa Savaii.

If all of the pieces of the puzzle, the weekly direct flight to Brisbane which will complement the weekly direct to Sydney should be in the air before the end of the year.

"And strategically, Samoa Airways second aircraft should also be flying next year," the Minister told the contestants during a courtesy call Friday morning. "You need more than one aircraft for any airline to succeed. The real money is in the air and we're restricted to just one aircraft now but it will get better."

Currently Samoa Airways has daily flights to Auckland and a weekly to Sydney Australia.

Lautafi says that it's a proud moment for Savaii to host the pageant for the first time ever.  And for the nine beauties to be the original group to debut in the big island speaks volumes of their courage and loyalty to Samoa.

"My take and personal opinion of Beauty Competition is that physical beauty is only skin deep, but it's the person that stands up as a contestant who really makes a big difference," he encouraged.

"It's not easy to live up to the expectations of everyone but getting here to where you are now says a lot than just your beauty and I have to admire your courage and your pride as Samoans because most of your are living overseas.

"You are all capable of wearing that crown. And I wish all of you the best and may you have an enjoyable competition.  I believe that this will be an experience of a life time and I'm very happy to note that your life time experiences will be on our island of Savaii."
For the contestants, they are more than appreciative to be accorded a first class exposure to meet Samoa Airways chief and have reassured Lautafi that after the Miss Samoa, their loyalty will continue as ambassadors of the country and Samoa Airways.
