American Air and Fiji Air seek expanded “codeshare”

Allows for easier transfer of passengers & bags between the two, expanding global marketing strategy

At a time when the Lolo Administration has requested Fiji Airways to look into operating weekly flights between Fiji and American Samoa, a joint application was filed yesterday (Thursday) by the US based American Airlines and Fiji’s national carrier, Fiji Air, with the US Transportation Department to expand the two carriers’ code-sharing agreements — in which each airline publishes and markets a flight under its own airline designator and flight number, as part of its published timetable or schedule.

According to the application filed yesterday, American Air requested it be permitted to display Fiji Airways’ “FJ” code on flights “operated by American or American Eagle within the United States; between the United States, on the one hand, and Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Brazil, on the other hand, beyond Fiji Airways’ Honolulu, Los Angeles, and San Francisco gateways.”

Fiji Airways’ request is to display its “FJ” code on American and American Eagle-operated flights “beyond Honolulu, Los Angeles, and San Francisco to any point in the United States, and between any point or points in the United States, on the one hand, and Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Brazil, on the other hand.”

Fiji Airways also requests that it be permitted display American’s “AA” code on Fiji Airways flights “between Los Angeles as well as San Francisco and Nadi, Fiji as well as all other island nations in the Pacific served by Fiji Air, including flights between Nadi and Honolulu with a stop in Apia. Additionally, flights between Nadi and Apia.”

According to the application, Fiji Airways launched in June this year flights between Nadi and San Francisco.

Samoa News reported last month the Lolo Administration had requested Fiji Airways to look into operating three weekly flights between Fiji and American Samoa as well as the possibility of operating flights to Honolulu and/or the US west coast. (See Samoa News edition July 29 for details)
