HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - It was a bittersweet morning for the crew of the Hokulea as the Polynesian voyaging canoe returned to Waikiki, ending the final chapter of the Malama Honua worldwide voyage.

But this isn’t the end for the Polynesian Voyaging Society.

On Friday, master navigator Nainoa Thompson revealed PVS’ next big voyage: A circumnavigation around the Pacific Ocean.

A day before he was expected to announce plans, Thompson told Hawaii News Now that PVS was looking at “going up into the seven big economies,” starting in Alaska and going clockwise around the Americas, the Pacific Islands, New Zealand and Australia.

“We do know that 65 percent of the economy shifted from Europe to here, so it’s engaging and a campaign of education and community building across all those countries,” he said.

Thompson added that they’ll travel to 47 areas, which will include underwater archipelagos that “people don’t know but provide us life, food, oxygen.”

They’re looking at a launch date of May 2021 at the earliest.
