Port container fire under investigation

Local authorities are investigating the cause of a container fire at the main Port of Pago Pago that was quickly contained by fire fighters. The fire, which occurred around 8:45a.m. Saturday inside a large metal container on the north side of the main Port building, sent black smoke into the air, which could be seen from the other side of the Pago Pago Bay.The container is used to store, what is called “dirty oil” or old oil, and was just pumped out Friday by a local vendor, leaving only hard oil sludge at the bottom of the container, according to an eyewitness at the main dock at the time of the fire - which was under control before 9a.m.Samoa News witnessed at least three firefighters from the Fire Division of the Public Safety Department immediately on the scene to put out the fire amid dark smoke coming from the site.Officials say no one was hurt. The local Coast Guard supervisor Lt. Steven Caskey said Saturday afternoon that local authorities are the lead investigators in this incident and Coast Guard is providing support.
