Police in Samoa clamp down on overloaded buses

Police in Samoa are clamping down on bus overloading and a dozen bus drivers were taken into custody on Friday.The drivers spent their whole morning at police headquarters for carrying more passengers than the permitted limit.Assistant Commissioner of Police, Fauono Talalelei Tapu, said more will be arrested.Most of the arrests were made on the western side of Upolu during the morning rush hour.Fauono said this was the busiest time of the day and some bus drivers were taking on extra passengers despite knowing their bus was full.He told Talamua Online this puts passengers’ lives at risk.A bus may only carry 34 passengers.Police and Land Transport Authority have stepped up patrols to put a stop to bus overloading during morning and evening rush hours.
