Pacific plays key role in Durban climate agreement

The low-lying Pacific Islands are more vulnerable to climate change than other parts of the world and have been pushing for strong action for more than 2 decades.

The agreement promised by the Durban Climate change conference includes all 194 nations.

It will be implemented from 2020 and will be legally binding.

At Durban, the Pacific Island nations worked closely with each other, and with like minded nations, to advocate for an agreement that would be tough.

David Sheppard, the Director-General of the Pacific Regional Environment Program, says that although the Pacific's demands were not met, the result is still a breakthrough.
