Open House to celebrate art students at ASCC

(BASED ON PRESS RELEASE) — Su'ifefiloi Art Studio is the new nickname for American Samoa Community College Art Department, and this coming Thursday, April 26 the Art Department will hold its annual Open House at Su’ifefiloi Art Studio to celebrate the creative endeavors of the Art Students between 4-6 p.m.

Numerous pieces of original student artwork will be on display that show the variety of art forms introduced to students in respective courses.

Such mediums include Black /White and digital photographs, pencil and charcoal drawings, watercolor and acrylic paintings, and ceramics. A good portion of the work will be for sale. This year’s goal is to help support the summer course called ART 299 “South Pacific Meets South West.” where students who are preregistered for the course will spend two and a half weeks exploring the art cultures of the American South West.

“The focus of this special studies project is mainly to provide the students with an intensive tour through California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, mainly to interact, and discover the Arts of the region while meeting artists, visiting select museums, galleries and universities with prolific art programs”, said ASCC Art professor Regina Meredith, MFA, who has planned out the itinerary in collaboration with Mira Costa art professor Roberto Salas, MFA. Salas visited American Samoa last year to contribute his skills to a new mural now placed in the entrance hallway at ASCC.

Meredith’s students already know the vital role of the Arts in perpetuating the Samoan culture, and the visit to the South West will expose them to other peoples for whom artistic expression fulfills a similar purpose.

“This special project will provide real encounters and interaction with others who embrace Art culturally, and as a means of identity, commitment and livelihood,” Meredith said “The project also requires daily journal entries, sketching and drawing requirements and a final piece that encapsulates the total trip. Students will get to visit and stay on campus at Arizona State University, University of New Mexico, and New Mexico State University before heading to the Cultural Centre in El Paso Texas that is owned by Professor Salas. The intent of the visit to the Universities is to provide choices for our students to attend once they complete their AA with an emphasis in Art here at ASCC.”

A portion of the proceeds from artwork sold during the Open House will help support “South Pacific Meets South West”. Tickets will also be sold to raffle off choice pieces of artwork and tee shirts with the new Fine Arts Logo.

A “Garageless Garage sale” will also be set up with lots of great deals on tools, DVD’s, clothes, a sink, a ladder, and much more. The event will be further enlivened with performances by the ASCC Concert Choir, this semester’s ASTEP music class, and the Ukulele Ensemble.
