Op-Ed: Election victory for Democrats

The American Samoa Democratic Party is proud to see the reelection of Barack Obama as President of the United States. This historic election offered the nation a choice between continuing progress, or regressing to the failed policies of the past. The American people chose to move forward, rather than go backward.

This election means a lot for American Samoa.

The reelection of President Obama was a vote for working together, rather than leaving people to fend for themselves. It was a vote for Obamacare, which will have huge positive impact for the Territory. It was a vote against cutting Medicaid, which would have cut funding for LBJ Hospital. It was also a vote for increased participation in the Pacific region, including free trade, more international cooperation, and environmental protection.

Tuesday, November 6th also witnessed the reelection of American Samoa’s representative to Congress, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin.

Faleomavaega has been a stalwart supporter of American Samoa on the national level, and the ASDP is pleased to see him sent back to Congress to continue to promote the Territory. As a veteran representative, Eni is a powerful voice in the U.S. House of Representatives.

This has truly been a historic election.

The ASDP is also very excited to welcome Representative- elect Tulsi Gabbard as the first Samoan woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Tulsi was born in American Samoa and now serves the Second District in Hawai’i. The ASDP looks forward to working with Tulsi to bring our nation and our Territory forward.

The American Samoa Democratic Party advances progressive values in the Territory. It represents American Samoa in the national party, and helps elect Democratic candidates for the U.S. Presidency.
