NOW WITH VIDEO: 49ers are AYFS Champions
The most dominating team in the American Youth Football of Samoa (AYFS) league, the still undefeated 49ers, coached by Loso I’aulualo, has managed to pull off another stunning “Undefeated Championship” season for the second time in a row. Their match up this year was once again the toughest contender in the league, the AYFS Raiders, who probably played their best game ever this season against the Niners for the title this past Saturday.
The AYFS League 2014 season has been remarkable and well coordinated this year with good response from the teams. During the closing ceremony, AYFS President Shiloh Pritchard sent out his sincerest gratitude to all the participants of the league this year, especially the coaches for volunteering their time to teach the youth of American Samoa.
“I would like to thank all the parents and supporters, who have allowed their kids to build a great future in this sport, as well as your support of the teams and the youth of American Samoa. I would especially like to thank the kids, the players who have displayed tremendous athleticism this year with the help of their coaches and their dedication to the youth. Fa’afetai tele lava.”
On Saturday, AYFS Championship Day, the first to field the Veterans Memorial Stadium was the Red and White All Star team for their 2014 All Star Game. The Red All Star team consisted of players from the Bears, Steelers, Cowboys and 49ers; and the White All Star team consisted of players from the Raiders, Falcons and Chargers.
Despite a hard fought game in the first half with the Red team going into half time with a six point lead, the White All Star team fought their way back with an unstoppable passing game, to tie up the ball game 20 - 20, all the way to full time, marking this year’s All Star game as a tie.
The Championship game showed much more of the most improved team in the league, the Raiders, and their performance in the first half showed why they were the No.1 contenders of the league. The Raiders led over the Niners 20 - 0 — something that no other team in the league had managed to do against the Niners all season.
However, the Niners answered the Raiders bid for victory with an offensive game that hit its stride — scoring points and racking up the scoreboard — while their defensive side made the crucial adjustments that changed the game around, when the Niners came back for the first time in the game, they led the Raiders 27 - 20.
At full time, the Niners sealed off their second undefeated championship game with a 63 - 37 victory.
